Trinity 3.11

This is a book about nuclear power and nuclear weapons. We can’t have one, without the other.

I met the co-author, Raymond Eddy, in the gym of all places. I was with my former Olympic lifting coach, Pete Miller (he is in the weightlifter’s Hall of Fame) and we were in the gym doing deadlifts. Raymond was there doing what we considered to be sissy body-building movements. Now, Olympic lifters always make fun of bodybuilders (because our sport is in the Olympics, their ‘sport’ is not . . .), so we proceeded to give him a ton of grief about what he was doing. He took it in stride, and we became friendly.

One day in the gym in 2011 Raymond started talking about work he and his wife were doing, which is how we found out that he and his wife, a Japanese National, were scientists. They were conducting research after the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami that destroyed the Fukushima nuclear power plant. As he continued to speak I became more and more interested and also realize that this was really a very compelling and interesting story. A few weeks later while we were in the gym and I said, “I think this should be a book.” After a couple of weeks, he came back to me and said, “I agree I think it’s a book so let’s write it.”

And so over the next 3 1/2 years, we wrote Trinity 3.11. It had been planned as a trilogy, but the other two books never materialized, in part due to Covid, and in part to other factors.

NUCLEAR POWER

What is Trinity 3.11?

This book is about nuclear power: both its harassed capacity to serve humanity as an energy source and its potential to destroy life, regardless of finite planetary limitations – in a way.

It weaves history, conjecture, and factual material, gleaned through extensive research and unusual professional experience in the subject matter, with expected and speculated actions that evil people could rend upon us – taking advantage of our shortsightedness, lack of preparedness and ignorance.

As you walk into your kitchen the next time, turn on the light, open the fridge, grab a drink and a snack, and go turn on the TV, pause a minute. These actions require electricity: and very few people know where the electricity comes from, much less how it is generated, delivered, and sustained. For those in the U.S. and worldwide not living within proximity to power plants, this question isn’t tricky for you to answer. You make the leap of faith from a power plant to a light switch without really considering how it happens. Power generation is a “demand” utility: it doesn’t sit in the power line going into your home or office waiting to be used. Instead, it is delivered on the powerlines as you “demand” it.

Unfortunately, science, politics, and truth have not yet aligned on nuclear power, nuclear armaments, and their interrelationship. Instead, their dependency – one upon the other.

Even the “cleanest” nuclear generation plant isn’t really “clean.” And, a million years, the half-life of spent nuclear fuel, the most dangerous man-made substance on Earth, is a Very. Long. Time. We, the authors, quote and pay tribute to “Twilight Zone” creator Rod Sterling and add, “For your consideration” . . .

Our Universe is a Marvel.

Let’s try not to screw it up, ok people?
